FIFA Rep. Inspects National Stadium

By Martin Wusha Conteh 4th October 2013

Head of Soils and Sports Surface Science and FIFA Representative, Dr Stephen W. Baser on Tuesday conducted an inspection tour on the National Stadium mainbowl in Freetown.

Baker`s visit will paved the way for the laying of an artificial turf that will replace the current outdated natural grass at the stadium.

During his tour, the FIFA representative examined the texture of the soil and later packaged a small sample of it before addressing a cross section of journalists.

Baker disclosed to journalists that his visit was to have first hand information as to how they can replace the current turf at the stadium with an artificial turf of high quality.

This, he noted will help a lot in terms of adding beauty to the stadium and also ensuring that the players play without fear of sustaining injuries.

He added that the current drainage system is still useful although some amount of adjustment is needed to get it more effective and reliable. He also inspected the Presidential and covered stands which, he also suggested need renovation.

He promised to submit his report with recommendations which will include maintenance equipment for the pitch.

The Public Relations Officer and Marketing Rep. of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Mr. John Konteh stated that the proposed work is a step forward for the country

He said: “This will definitely bring changes in the country`s representation especially hosting international matches,” he sierraleonefootball.com. “Leone Stars` against Equatorial Guinea match was more of a skating than a football match.

He added that fans would stop complaining after the whole exercise would have completed.

The national stadium has been described by foreign players and coaches as the “worse and dangerous pitch” in the world and most times referred to, by local journalists as waterlogged and bumpy pitch.
